just a brain wave....

if it is legal for amish and sparks to send a map out with the sound files converted into their map file. then surely it is legal for them to zip them up and make them into a zip file and distribute them. just liek they have with their map.. if not then the map is illegal too.. so is the map illegal ? if it isnt then why havent ya converted them to zip file and distribute them

i aint haveing a go at anyone just trying to clear it up and try get these sound files

.........................................................................

@ foyley.

yup thats how i see it too but you could compress the sound files into a .zip and distribute them cos they arent in raw format anymore. just like subway is being distributed....

okay so how do i extract the ff files lol

Based on my interpretation above, that map is illegal because it contains items that are not to be redistributed.
Based on your comment, we can all redistribute them and there is no problem.... well, except that we don't have them.

It's all a matter of interpretation.

The way amish and sparks released it, I guess they are only putting themselves in danger either legally by redistributing copyrighted materials or socially by not helping the community do it themselves. It would have been best not to distribute at all based on those options. But their reasons for distribution is not the topic.
We want to figure out if we are allowed to take the sounds and how do we take them if we are allowed. Perhaps we'll be lucky enough in this endeavor to convince amish and sparks to assist us in that quest.

Too many generalities in that license. I can perceive that to mean the maps we create are a derivative and therefore illegal.

However, decompress and decompile I believe are two different words with different meanings. We would decompile an exe for example but decompress an ff file.

The one we are concerned with here is:
Quote:
- Make copies of this Program or any part thereof, or make copies of the materials accompanying this Program.

Based on that, we can extract the ff contents but we can't redistribute them with our maps.

I take that to mean, we can tell people how to extract the contents to their systems because they already own them. We can release our maps with said instructions so our maps have sounds. We just can't release our maps with the sound files included in them.

Anyone else like this interpretation?

Hi Erik,

Long time no speak!

It's a very grey area. I would assume that the problem with the sound files is that they are 3rd party, and that 3rd party holds the copyright. Maybe Treyarch are trying to work out a deal, to stop themselves breaching that copyright.

I personally don't think there is a problem distributing the sounds in ff files, for 2 reasons...

1) It's quite hard for the average user to get the files from the FF files. (unless someone makes a tool to do it)

2) The files are already included in the game. So owners of the game already have copies of them anyway.

Just my thoughts on the situation.

Regards,

Les

I can go along with that. Seems reasonable.

Great to hear from you Pointy(Git).

the fact they have released mod tools at all shows that they are happy for mapping and modding to take place. maybe the sounds are third party maybe they just screwed up, they dont have much to gain by solving the problem quickly just sating their fans and keeping the franchise going, i imagine they have more pressing issues leading up to christmas which is why there will not be a patch before then but really speculation doesnt get people anywhere.

If you build it, they will come (the sounds that is)

Yeah like the office Christmas party!

I want sounds, my level would be more than ready before Christmas if I had them.

One other potential problem you might have in getting access to sounds for zombie maps: I thought I recognized one or two sounds from Half-Life 2 when I was playing zombie co-op. If I'm right, licensing issues may prevent the relevant sounds from being redistributed.

There is now a decompiler available. The question remains as to the legality of its use.

As for using your own sounds, I suppose you just need parent/guardian permission to use the sounds of your nephew [lol]. Then comes the tedious work of properly name and placing those sounds within the game. That's the real problem.
