Hi guys.

Ok seem to have hit a small obsticle here! trying to fix a problem with my frame rate in my map. It's pretty much portalled though im not sure on the best way to portal a mainly outdoor, open field map.

the little building i do have are portaled and i have basically 'block-portalled' the open area though this isnt very effective as my fps hasnt changed upon doing so

Everything non-structual is detailed, along with everything not seen caulked though my frames can spike from 200 to as low as 10

So my question is, whats the best way to portal a map of the above description and what else culd be draining my fps?

Perhaps you made too many portals.

Thanks for reply mate, i know how to portal but cant understand this, i also got max_visibilty after i portalled my map and made everything detailed

Very confusing!

Ok, i may as well post another problem here, possibly related? Not sure anyway.. My compile seems to freeze on 'merging into concave windings'

Don't even no where to start on sorting that out?

Does it actually freeze during merging concave windings, or does it return a Windows error that the program encountered an error & needs to be shut down? Check any oddly shaped patch meshes, if you see any delete them & try compiling again. I have 2 patch meshes in my map that were bent in an unusual way and it would cause the compile to crash at merging concave windings until I removed them.

Also, if you want a good example of how to portal a large, mostly wide open map, check out the maps Ardennes & Barbarossa from After Hourz. Load them up in devmap & set g_gametype bas, then use r_showportals 1 to look at their portals.

I working on an outdoor map now and the way I portaled it is this.

I made a large portal square in the center basically in a small valley then worked out from it in all four directions sort of like a tic-tac-do grid.

I'm getting 91 fps right now on it.
