When you submit the map it says that i must include the .map file. Is this to see how neet we can map and not just bodge something together. Eg, to do things the right way...not to take short cuts?

I think it's proof that your created the final product. If you have the original map file, then you probably have rights to the map.

it is after all a mapping contest...so (from my understanding) part of the judging will be on actual construction and techniques used to create your map [angryalien]

I have a few questions:
First, does the map have to be a historical battlefield, or can it be "realistic fiction", something that could have happened, but can't be backed up.

Second, When I release a map, should i be getting a copyright, or something, or is that just something only a few people do?

Third, is it a bad if I have included my .map file with some of my previous maps? i did this so people could take a look at how i made my map, if they had any questions. Which leads into another question: Is there any way to make a .map file read-only?

Concerning the copyright
I have one for Video and text.

The cost money and take about 6 months to get. Does not matter what story behind the map is.

Making a .map file read-only can be changed. If you submitted the .map file to help others is a good idea, but it can have effects like this, we can keep an eye out for copies.
We need the name of the map.

In addition, you should never send out a map that you will use in a contest. This is a bad idea, and problems will arise concerning the owner.

yep, and btw, it is the first map that i made what i'm going to send in mp_stcomedumont, so i don't think that i will get many points from construction techniques [tongue] ...but i will see how it goes :D :)
