I've been making my buildings from scratch, now that I discovered Prefab buildings I feel stupid. Anyone make their own or is it just a waste of time?

I make my own prefabs really, as others have said it gives more personal feeling. And you can reuse them on your own other maps without feeling 'cheap' about it.

I'm not saying that using the IW prefabs (for stuff like the Backlot stuff) is bad but I think the more accepted maps will be quite different styling than the current lot.

If you look at the stock maps they are all somewhat different, might be in the same setting but still have allot of differences in stock builings and the layouts.

Try be creative ... that's what it's about really.

prefabs are great map filler
sometimes your map idea may inspire you
do your own or you may need to make the building
according to your idea you may build 2 or three for a map
save them as prefabs to reuse later but after you
build the structure's to go with your map idea prefabs
can be used to fill in where your creations left off
to make the map more useable

i am half asleep here at my puter i hope you get what i am
trying to say cause my mind just went blank an i lost my train
of thought... i think i said enough to convey my idea ..sorry....

I always build my own. I find that too many of the stock prefabs have elements for sp in them that I have to go in and chop.

Be original, learn and feel the pride of building your whole map yourself.

We have always tried to have a collection of prefabs available for those who want to use them over at my site which I cant name here but I will let you fill in the blanks.

I found that many of the prefabs included in the modtools package for the different CoD games are really usefull on how the game designers have thought them. ;)

I'm a complete noob when it comes to all of this, but I enjoy designing and drawing my own buildings. Another option is using a provided prefab but making changes to it to suit your needs. It's a quick way to get a building done and learn something along the way. I have spent HOURS drawing my own buildings and am quite a ways away from publishing a map, but I am having a great time doing it!

Is better to build all by your self, but you can also make a good balance betwen your prefabs and the stock ones, since the not all prefabs works for every map you will notice that at the end you will need to do your owns.

also there are lot of unfinished or uncompleted buildings in stock, so you can finish them in the way you want and even open the completed ones
and modify them.

feel free, I something fits in your map use it, if not build it.

My first map I built everything from zero and it was great , now Im working my second one and Im using some prefab stuff as a base to start but there are some specific ones that will need to be build by my self.

[wave] good luck!

it's mostly a DIY, just bear in mind that you want to let the player move smoothly going up or down the stairs. Just make a small test map with 2 rooms at different level and put your test_stairs as a link between the two. ;)

Former UT mapper?

There's some prefab stairs in the CoD1 and CoD2 sections - t hey work fine in CoD4 radiant. you just need to caulk them first.
Stairs are straightfoward to make anyway. I believe the dimensions are the same for CoD4 as the previous, so steps should be between 8 units and 12 units high
