For instance Ive tried downloading COD2 models and prefabs but I cant manage to view them in COD4 radiant - do these files need converting and, if so, with what?
directly above the forum table, above where it says "Author" there should be a "new topic" button....not sure about the prefab question.
Back to original topic,
I make my own buildings, its easy, and they are mine :)
Once you make 1 its not hard to make a change here and there to come up with a new building. I generally at the start of a map make a couple of single story and 2 story buildings and clone them so I can get a basic layout, then once Im happy with the layout remove the clones and replace with individual buildings as I go.
I use stock prefabs like, playground equipment, cars, crates etc to fill out the map though. It saves time and the map is still an original looking place.
For stairs I just stack blocks on top of each other and cut them to size.

I think people prefer originality as opposed to the same building you see in every other map.

I can imagne that it is better to create your own buildings and other prefabs. but a map isn't only good because someone created every brush on its own. I think the layout and the gameflow are as much or even more important then just self made prefabs.
like me. I like to create a map where people can walk around and shoot the hell out of everybody. But trying to create a layout (from scretch) and getting it to work and making every prefab by my self would take years for me. Sow I use the maplayouts from other games (counterstrike) and rebuild them to my liking. For my current project I'm remaking de_dust. and yes.. I used the prefab buildings from backlot. but I have just spent 2 months on creating the map and It's @ 80% right now so it can be played soon..
see link: "click"
I think it;s more important to get gameplay correct then just a pretty picture.. |

Using prefabs is a big mistake almost every newbie makes.
You have to design and build your own buildings or whatever if you really want to become good in mapping.
Apart from prefabs of crates etc. you shouldn't use any (only to look at to see how IW builds their maps).
It will take a long time though before you can build maps of high quality, but trust me, it's worth it. If you know how to work with Radiant a 100% you can build anything you want aslong as it is within the engine limitations.
Before you ask, yes, your first buildings will look 'crap'.
It takes TIME, it doesn't have to be a map, I usualy just Google some pictures of houses and start to build them.
My first building had 3 brushes, 2 walls and a ceiling, now I can build anything I want with high quality (not trying to show off :p)
DONT USE THEM.

You cant tell. This map is looking very polished. In this instance, without having played it, based on the screenshots, you have a nice looking map!
In saying that. It brings more satisfaction to map making when you know you have created everything. As many here have mentioned, I too only use selected models and prefabs like crates, furniture etc...Coming up with an origonal idea can at times can be difficult. |
