This was very depressing to see [banghead]. I ran a final compile of my map yesterday. 15 hrs after the light section of the compile started (on extra) i was 95% done. Then I get a system error that says something like there is not enough virtual memory...bla bla bla. And the compiler exited at 95%. I didnt have any programs working and make computer has 1 gig of memory. What went wrong and can it be fixed? Also, i was wondering if it really makes that much of a difference to run the compiler with the lighting set to extra. Ive been told that it does look better, but put yourself in my shoes for just a sec. I need to compile a day version of my map and a night version of my map. Then on top of that I have two seperate versions for a server that I am apart of. So basically I have four maps in total. Is it worth the 4-7 days time to compile with lighting set to extra when I could get all four maps done in 24hrs?

Do you have anything running in the background while you did your compile that could have come on? By this I mean virus scanners, windows update and so on? These all put a big hit on your system when they activate so they could really mess up your compile.

I turn most of this stuff off at all times and control or use them at my convenience and not the other way around.

oki mate listen.

i had a map that took 7 days to compile i was like wtf. i found a few lil things here and there that needed touching up so instead o fcompiling again for 7 days. i made each house i have into a prefab i made the mesh that i did into detail along with most sections of my houses that needed to be detail.. i then transferred it all over to another .map file and rana full compile it took 6 hours and trust me its a prety large map. the light is awsome the textures are nice and it didnt take me 7 days again. yes it took me 2 days to sort the map out but i guessed its better than 7 days compiling all the time

you invest your time...alot of your time....and hard work into a map, or as you said 4 maps - and then you want to rush the last piece of the building process???

If the compiler stopped because of virtual memory the you will need to increase it in your computer's system tools. After that, compile everything properly and don't take shortcuts. You may be pleased because your map is complete but everyone else will suffer on the server due to a poor compile.

stryder please dont mis-understand me. I dont want to rush any part of my map. I have spent 100s of hrs on it and I want it to be as good as possible. I just dont want to compile my map for 24hrs and then find out there was an error and I have to start over. It is not exactly convenient for me to compile four maps over 4 days. As far as I can tell it isnt really noticable if someone uses fast compile or extra. As far as performance goes I am less sure. Either way I just want to do what is best overall. Now, if I can get rid of that error than I will try using extra again. How do i increase my virtual memory in system tools?

you can increase your virtual memory in the following way

right click my computer and select properties

on the advanced tab click the settings button for the performace block

on the advanced tab change the virtual memory from the defaul 'let windows decide what is best for me' to something custom (like 1 or 2 Gb)

now im getting another error. This occurs when the VIS starts. It says: cod2map.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. the compiler then says press any key to continue and if i do it goes right to the light compile. Help please. [cry]

That's the windows stock error window, informing you the compiler has crashed. It doesn't say anything about why it crashed.

This can have alot of causes, so.. post your compile log (with the -vis thing in it and everything..) maybe we can make some sense of it.

well basically the compile shows everything that it always showed. it creates the bsp just fine and then the error appears when it starts the vis. then it stops vis and goes right to lighting. ill post the compile up to the error anyway. btw, if the error lies with the map file itself there is only one thing that i did prior to the error. it involved me making some wooden board brushes and i was throwing some around the map. Like i said before I have 4 maps so i was copying them over. However when i copied them they got slightly distorted because the brushes had been rotated. However I kept them slightly distorted. Maybe that is causing the problem? Anyhow, heres my compiler up until the error appears (actually the error didnt even appear this time, the vis just stopped anyway):
