Start with the video tutorial about setting up CODRadiant.

Later, you'll learn to curse Radiant in so many words and in so many unintelligible sounds. [mad]

Watch all the other tutorials next, get familiar with how to shape brushes, how to mold them, and cut them.

Create a small test world, one in which you can experiment around, become familiar with the mapping process from start to finish, and learn how to do good brushwork.

What do I mean by good brushwork?

Caulk any side the player can't see.

Avoid overlapping faces, and avoid CSG subtract (learn to be a clipper tool master before you even think about using CSG subtract).

Learn to make your structures from the ground up, build them so that the faces don't overlap. Make the brushes neat and efficient, merge brushes whenever reasonable. Some people disagree with CSG Merge, but I think it's a wonderful tool.

Keep your structures on the grid as much as possible (especially as you learn to map), use a large grid setting whenever possible.

If you decide to use patches and terrain meshes for your first map... start off simple and be very very careful when you manipulate the vertices. Use tolerant weld, and merge (crtl-k) any vertex that is dragged on top of another.

Once you're somewhat familiar with Radiant and making bruhes, you can start mapping for real. Start off with a small map, and start off simple. Radiant will give you so many problems initially, that you'll spend more of your time troubleshooting then you will making your map in all likelihood. Save your really good map ideas for later, when you have more mapping experience, and are able to do them justice.

If you start out with a really complex, large map, and it's your first time mapping, you're asking for trouble. Some people live charmed lives, and are able to circumvent most troubles, but the rest of us mortals.... anyways, Radiant can screw around with you, and if you try to screw around with it, it will BURY you! (little exaggeration, it'll just bury your map)

Most importantly, remember to BACKUP your work! Save a copy of your map (under a different name each time) as you map.

That is all I know little grasshopper (actually it's not, but anyways...)

Have fun!

Muhahahahaha!!!! lol

KEEP IN MIND

This is forum is for SOF1, if your mapping for SOF1, you dont use GTK... You use the SDK for SOF1...

hehe. No problem. All of them use radiant in some form or another. And all pretty much have the same problems.
