i thought genneral game discusions should be allowed to.

why do u think there are next to no DVD games arround, just about everybody i know has a DVD player by now, the produktion costs arent higher!!

and we would have to "please insert CD #2" "please insert CD #3" "please insert CD #1"(again) anymore... i dont get it? ???

A standard DVD format still hasn't been decided.

btw, I don't have a DVD-rom. Waiting for the standard and the games ;)

What other advantages are there?

Would it just improve graphic frames with cut scenes...or....or what?

yes, DVD is a format...but there still isn't one standard format.

Its similar to the 56k protocol thing if you remember back then. When 56k first came out, there were two formats (that couldn't be used together), 56kflex and 56kX2. The industry wouldn't settle on one until finally they did when, which was the v.90.

There is a standard for read only dvd's, but not for writable dvd's.

I think the main issue is that the media costs more, that's why you still see the odd piece of software distributed on floppy disks.  Also, not everyone has a dvd in their computer.

If it fits on one floppy it's cheaper to distribute on a floppy, but as soon as you break over 2 floppies it's cheaper to burn cd's(this may have changed, the price of floppies and cd's may have changed since I first read this)

I'm not sure what the cost of reproduction on dvd's and cd's are, but if it's 4x as expensive to stamp out a dvd then a cdr, it would only make sence to release games on dvd's if they use more then 4 cd's.

Another problem is that even if you make your textures really big, not many computers have graphics cards that can run a game at a good speed using textures that huge.

its just that dvd roms are not spread enough to be considered to replace the cd.. and to publish 2 versions cd & dvd cost to much money.. so they stick to the most compatible medium the cd.. for example i don't have a dvd rom.. i use my 16x bruner as cd reader (cause my 24x teac died a couple month back) and i'm not planing on upgrading to a dvd cause there is no use for it.. i have a dvd player so watching dvds is not an option.. aswell there are not much games released dvd only.. so there is no reason to buy one (yet) .. uc c thoose 2 statements block each other and it won't change anytime soon.. remember when the cd started to beat the floppy disk was the time when games where released on10+ disk (indiana jones 4 anyone?) so it was time for a new medium.. but that isn't the fact on the cd it still has alot of space to offer where most of the games still come one 1 cd .. even 3 or 3 cds wouldn't bother me at all.. also usualy u need thoose cds just once for the installation after that u usualy play with 1 or no cd in ure cdrom.. soo there isn't much of a reason to switch to dvd yet for games distribution, but the time will come

I would like to add that it isn't the amount of space that limits the size of the textures, but the amount of memory needed for the game.

The main reason I've heard is that DVDs just aren't common enough yet.  I would expect in the new few years that you'll see games released on both multiple CDs and DVD and then eventually transition over to DVD (like the early years when CDs first came out).
