I don't have a DVD-Rom, either.
Just the PS2 in the living room.  ;-p

Actually, I could see this next time a game comes out with 3 or so CD's..  I've had software (eg. SuSE 7.2) and magazines give out DVD disks rather than CDs for years now.  Usually, it's been a case of "here are 4 CDs and 1 DVD with the same info" though, rather than a DVD of seperate content.

I'm not sure what the cost of reproduction on dvd's and cd's are, but if it's 4x as expensive to stamp out a dvd then a cdr, it would only make sence to release games on dvd's if they use more then 4 cd's.

not as far as i know, its just about eaqualy as cheap to press a dvd as a cd....

the only thing DVD games need is a premiere, a rilly gr8 game solely on DVD....
this would boost the idea

and DVDs are much piracy safer (for now anyway).... than CDs...

I imagine that releasing a game solely on DVD would limit the target audience. To put it in perspective, let's say that 30% of your potential buyers don't own a DVD-ROM. That's a 30% cut in your potential income. In such a hard and competetive (or so I've read) I don't see many distributors willing to take the chance. The ones that do, usually ships both DVD and CD versions.

Me, I don't see...

A DVD drive is not expensive.

Actually, I have 2 comp that read DVD, plus a DVD player for the TV.
For me, I find it pretty common.  :;):

Would be good to have both CD and DVD release, but someone must start that soon. (ID Soft, Doom3? *hint**hint*)

I havent bothered with a DVD drive either, I have a dvd player.

It seems that most are in this situation, I havent looked at the prices of a DVD drive recently but I'm sure most people would get one if games started coming on them.

Just make it like CD games were.. we never had one when they started coming out, and never for a year after, but we ended up getting a CD drive once there was a need for it.

The only thing I have on DVD is MSDN.. which is kind of a pain when you've got an OS on the darn thing, but then I think  Microsoft figured out how to make it bootable (or I just burnt it to a bootable CD, I forget :P).

I think you can still order CDROM versions of MSDN, it's just like when CD's were new, we'll eventually start seeing the bigger games on DVDROM and CDROM, and then the mass market will start switching, and CD's will be a thing of the past, sorta anyway.

At this stage, there's no real point to using a DVD to publish a video game.

If I recall, back when DVD Drives first became available, there were some games that were published in both formats.  One of them was published by Activision - Zork Nemesis.  I played it on CD, it seemed fine but was 4 or 5 discs.  It used some odd proprietary video codecs that didn't compress the cutscenes enough, I imagine.

Perhaps it's the fact that we don't make games like that very much ... or it's just that in these cases our video compression is of a much higher quality and takes up much less space.

That's open for debate though, I'm not a video codec guru.
