Hey,

I hear on the forums on this website and others like it about people asking how to use water textures and make it realistic, so i am writing this tutorial.

Firstly i am assuming your editor is properly set up.

1) Create with a brush the base of your lake/river/pond preferably using paint height (Y).
2) Make a 1 unit thick brush using the texture water located at common/water (note : make sure its not the waterclip texture)
3) Select the top face of the water brush and cover it with a water texture from SFX.
4) Make another 1 unit thick brush of the water texture in common/water and place it just over the top of the first brush.

Now your water will be ready for use.

TIPS

the texture common/water is invisible in call of duty, it just adds the effects of water (sound and when you shoot into it.)
you NEED to place a water texture from SFX or a custom texture to see the water.

I am having a problem trying to create water for my river. The river runs through my entire map and has bends in it so I am using numerous brushes. My problem is that after I complile you can see each joint in the river where the brushes meet. What am I doing wrong?

Did you connect the vertices? If you did and it still happens try pressing S to bring up the surface inspector and under patch texturing there is a button called cap. Select your terrain than press cap and the texture I suppose aligns itself so it looks like one brush.

What should I be using for the brush? Should I be using a patch mesh? I tried your advise using a patch mesh and still had the visible joints. Vertices are all connected. I can't use a single brush because it would be too long.

Recommed using terrain mesh,

Unless you want to use brush's

When you put 2 brushes connecting, you need to use no-draw on the inner face of the brushes where they connect. THis will create a seemless water/river brush.

Okay, I've been messing with this for a couple of weeks now and haven't figured it out yet. What I am trying to do is place water in my river. The river winds through my map and varies in depth. I've tried using brushes which worked except the flow of the water in the bends looked terrible. I tried using terrain mesh like what was suggested but I keep getting an error saying (Bending of terrain curves not implemented). Also I have no depth when using mesh weather it be terrain or patch. I can bend the patch mesh to follow the bends in the river but with no depth when the actor runs through the water it sounds like they're running on dry ground. You can only hear water splashing when running in shallow water at the rivers edge. I don't know what I'm missing here but I can really use some help.
