warning: no collision map file for misc/model.... is this a serious problem?
what exactly is a collision map file?

This simple mean that model has not got a 'collmap'. A collmap is simple a .map with the shape of the model made from 'clip' brushes to make it solid. The only problem you will get with this error is it will not be solid in game.

in that case. is there a way to break up a model into brushes and clone it and give the clone a clip texture. ?[drink]

From what I gather, you need to simply surround the model with clip brushes. For example, use a German halftrack, put ladder texture brushes on the vertical back and perhaps vertically near the hood so a player could climb on to it, then place player clip brushes on the other horizontal and vertical surfaces of the halftrack so that players can't walk through the track or they can stand on the track without falling through. I think that you can do these clip operations with very thin, (1") brushes, so that it doesn't look like a player is standing above the surface of the model and you can also cut the brushes and place them very close to the model for good detail. I think you will have good luck with this but others will read and correct this post if I am in error.

All of the models that end in "_static" already have collmaps and are solid in game. These are primarily vehicle models and if you have a choice between two models and 1 is _static, I would use the _static one. Otherwise just place the clips around the model.

The shader warnings are normal too they will not cause a problem and can be ignored.

I brought in a simple tree model that was in the xmodel folder, but still got the no collision map error. if I surround the tree with a clip would that solve that problem?

yes, you can just put a box around the tree and use a clip texture on the box
