Do not use textures with "_blend" in the name they will be see through.

Lol i quess IW likes to mess with people, the duhoc_trench_path is a blend texture even though it does not say it. You will have to use another texture underneath so you don't see through your ground.

Veef- is there a purpose for blend textures and are they useful for the average mapper or not? Just curious- all these detail ?s drive me bonkers... [crazy]

The purpose is to blend different textures together, very usefull unless you want your terrain all one texture. Have a look at the alpha belnding tutorial located here. http://www.modsonline.com/Tutorials-read-122.html

Cool, thanks. I'm wondering if this applies to something I am working on in my map right now.

Without thinking too much about it, I needed a creek running through my map and proceeded to make creek "sections" with terrain patches 9x9, orienting the vertices like so: ----\__/---- (with the short dashes even at top of creek)- it is all one patch though, and I got to thinking on the way home tonight that doing it that way is going to be rather impractical (or so I thought) because I know I am going to want multiple textures on the creek (top, sides, bottom).

So Veef, are you saying that I can use blend (alpha) textures to accomplish this "look" on a single patch that represents the whole creek? Or is there a much simpler way like creating individual patch sections, one each for the top, sides and bottom without looking unnatural.
I did read a post last night that pointed out that brushes can't intersect brushes (z-fighting), but that xmodels can intersect brushes (and maybe patches? [confused] -can't remember [ohwell])

Thanks for putting up with all the questions- learning from scratch sucks.

Read the tutorial posted on alpha blending and it'll probably help you understand the value of alpha blending for what you're doing.

Alpha blending provides subtle transitions between textures (grass to dirt, etc) and provides a much more realistic terrain than the sharp transition butted patches would provide.

To alpha blend you lay two identical patches on top of each other and softly "erase" away portions of the alpha (blend) texture to display the primary terrain underneath.

So you just need to make sure and use textures that have alpha "cousins" where you need blending, eh?
Related... is there a way to change the COD2 Radiant background so I can read the 4pt. lettering texture labels in the texture window?- right now they are black-on-black.
