What I do when I have a block is I search for images on the net of ww2. Sometimes I find one that inspires me. The other thing I do is just start laying blocks (represent buildings)out and let the map start developing it's self. So you don't like tanks and you like close quarters. Just put your building blocks closer together.

I don't however base my maps on ww2 actual locations, towns, or battles but rather a building from that time period. Something that caught my eye in a photo.

Something people don't think about is using Google Earth. I don't know how good it will be with a WW2 Scenario but it could be used to layout streets, coastline etc. Some buildings can be zoomed in on quite nicely. Most of the towns of WW2 are still out there and possibly with the same street patterns. Just an idea.[biggrin]

Well, get a few pics of the 1920s-1940s to get a general idea of the structural aspect of cities and farms. Since you want close combat, a major city area would likely be your idea.
Some of the BGL books we use in the canadian forces are avaialbe on the official site (www.dnd.ca) on how snipers and mg42s were set up properly. Some of these even include british sniper tactics. [sniper]
There can also be more info on the new website of my brigade and the different regiments (www.34gbc.ca)

Redrum's idea is good, and yes, most cities still use the same pattern. Is is easier (easier, as in cost-efficient) to bulldoze and rebuild a series of homes, and redo the pavement, then it is to clear everything up, redesign a plan, redo the sewers, etc, etc.

I can't wait till the tools for CoD2 come out. Will be working on a city with many sniepr points. Talked to 2 friends and they're interested in working on a single player campaign, and coding a real platoon advance, and using actual brit and american doctrines.
