I know that the title of my post probably has a few of you salivating, well sorry to burst any bubbles but what I am going to say makes a lot of sense.

When the "new" editor arrives, there will be an onrush of tutorials, questions and eventually maps.

That is a very good thing but the flip side of all of this... COD UO.

What you talking about Willis?

Well, I for one, am going to keep making maps for COD UO. My reasoning, there are NO vehicles in COD2 (YET)<<<(YET) and until there is, people will want new maps where they can drive to their hearts content.

Now don't get me wrong, i am also looking forward to making some nice looking COD2 maps but there will be a need for UO maps.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... all of you who are finding it hard to sleep at night because of NO new editor, keep making UO maps, chill and peace.

Well you can still make COD2 maps already, just using 'common/caulk' you can create a whole map then convert it when the COD2 editor is out.

could be true but we don't know what the scaling is or if the doors are still as high as they used to be and stuff like that and also you can't use any models or maybe even patches

[rocking] ^^^^^ NOT

I took a map I was working on, selected all of it, made ALL textures caulk and went to [sleeping] last night.

Oh goodie some of you say, thanks for sharing... [read]

My experiment led to one of the worst nightmares I have ever had
[banghead] I am still shaking from the caulkathon.

Lesson learned...old map stays CoDUO, new map for COD2 = on hold ... [duh]

the scaling is the same as cod and coduo - so that isnt an issue

models however - aren't ported from cod and uo into cod2 - so it would be best to stay away from putting those into your map

patches will load into the new editor as well

there are 3 ways you can jump start your mapping for cod2:

1 - study the scripting and the methods required for some of the built-in functions - like exploders

2 - start making your map structures - using common textures (the building blocks)...you can save individual buildings as prefabs and import them into your map...in fact terrain (patches and terrain meshes) are ported directly into cod2 as well

3 - study the methods for witing directX 9 shaders

there are a couple of good tutorials by microsoft on the web...google for directx 9.0c shaders and you will find them

preperation makes a good map great - and a great map unbelievable

Does this mean that if we dont know how to write shaders we wont get those lovely reflections in some textures !

Why not like the textures very much.

Getting Started with Direct3D:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/archive/default.asp?url=/archive/en-us/directx9_m_Summer_04/directx/direct3d/gettingstarted/gettingstarted.asp

Seems a lot off reading and learning ahead.
