Hi guys!

Am I right in assuming that if I put a portal in my map and I don't get any errors when I compile then that portal is working ok?

Thanx Ian.

Yes!

But not how a portal should, technically if you make a skybox you already have 1 portal. Now if you make a second one it's going to be calculated or drawn almost all the time. As you can always see it or the portal that your in (the skybox) can see it.

You can put a caulk brush in front of a portal - go behind the caulk and look through. Because the caulk brush will be structural and your behind it the portal should not 'draw' so you will see all the models and details disappear in the portal zone.

hi

you can try it. start the map with "\devmap mapname" , when loaded "\r_showportals 1". you will take it to reason if he works (you have to see transparent light blue areas where the border of the portal is) :)

I know this might sound stupid, but! what is the point of putting a caulk brush around your portal, the player can't pass through it, it acts like an invisible wall.

so i made a single room building in my working sky box map with other single room spaces
used no draw portal for the whole brush and then portal for the outside face of the brush that closed the openings where windows and doors were. it compiled and when i did devmap myname it loaded my map when i did /r_showportals 1 it did not display them. so im asking is this cos of the sky box or did i do it wrong. my portals are a flush finish to the window openings(structural) the frames that are in the window are (detail) and were not visable when the portal was added(filtered out).
does the internal mitered corners of my house cause errors to portaling of the structural.

The mitered in corners should not be the problem, most mappers do that with their corners.

When I portal windows and doors the portal textures must be in contact with a structural brush to seal everything properly.

I extend my portal textures past being flush with the structural brush and take them several units into the structural brush.

The best way to make portals is to completely Filter (F) out the Detail!
