Ive pretty much just started mapping these last two weeks (practiced with cod4 tools whilst waiting for cod5 tools to be released) and im just after a bit of advice.

Ive been working on this map for a few days and i have decided to put a bit of a lake in the middle, i want to try and make it look as real as possible so ive made the terrain bumpy around the edges rather than just doing it square. I would just like to know what you guys recommend as the best (and easiest) way to do the water, i have been doing it as a mesh and dragging the verticles to the bank of the lake trying to line it up but this is very time consuming and tricky.

Is there an easier way to fit in the water mesh without having any gaps along the side?

Thanks in advance.

You could draw out a clip_water brush under the terrain, and raise or lower the height of the brush to your liking. Then just use a water texture on the top face of the clip_water brush.

What I did and it seemed to work for me is create a big rectangular brush that is big enough to fill in all the gaps along the edge for the terrain.

Heres a link to what I did if you cant see it

Press your "Y" key to bring up your advanced patch editing options ,choose paint height.Use the "ALT" key and your left mouse button to raise the terrain, and the "ALT" key and right mouse button to lower it(in the 3d window, with terrain mesh)... Have fun...[tongue]

you can also use patch meshes for water aswell, and blend out around the edges of the water to give it a shallow going into deep water effect,

I have also found that even using terrain patches now gives you volume, meaning although a patch is less than a unit thick, when you jump into the water, you can sink down quite a way, not just fall through the patch.
