Actually portals are extrememly important, especially in MP mapping. The reduction in load and usage helps tremendously. Rofl.

Anyways check if you have any clipping problems near the tints as well, sometimes if you do a shoddy job at clipping or if you have brushmodels overlapping you'll have that problem.

If you have one material drawing from more than one reflection probe (i.e if you have two reflection probes in the same distance from said material) it will cause the red tint, same if there are too many in one area. Portals and reflection probes go hand in hand to make sure the surfaces cast the correct reflections that you want.

But yes portals are not needed if you want a few reflection probes that are spread into their own "zones".

Thanks for all your hints!

I got i fixed by simply cut the "red layered" brushes into pieces.
Most of these red layers were on walls which were spread over more than 1 floor of a building.

Is it the wrong way to make a wall higher than 1 floor?

Its not "wrong" no, but then you would have the same texture going from the ground floor up to floor 1, rather than different, textures.

But it depends what suits the buildings or if it causes errors, such as the reflection probe business.

make sure you have reflection probes in EVERY single room or seperate space, even if the player cant walk into that room, or can even get into that space, if there's a texture in it, it will require a reflection probe.
the thing is, if there's a texture inside a room where there is no probe, it wil go red, even if the texture overlaps into a room where there IS a probe present.
so get used to placing reflection probes in every single thing you've just created.

not true, i usually have only 1 probe for a whole map until its almost finished then i add more

the game uses the reflection probe that is closest to you and uses the images from that to cast on specular surfaces
so there is only 1 probe, it will use that for everything

erhm *cough* well its true for me... make a building, and dont put any reflection probes inside, then check the colour of everything inside... *gasp* its red.
maybe its because of vista, or patch 1.5 or my video card of whatever, but some people just have more problems with red textures than others.

Ok, by the way, I use XP and the mod-tools 1.1, only gameversion is 1.5 (Installed the wrong update only for the game) and till now I was too lazy reinstalling the whole game to get the mod-tools to 1.5.

Could this be a reason too?

Sporadic

Read Killers post again, its good practice to have at least 1 reflection probe in your map, compile reflections and then test. The red tint is because you have no reflection data.
