Seems the Australian government has offered to give him a state funeral.

Appropriate, IMO. No word yet if the family will want it, though.

Is that the equivalent of being buried in Arlington or something?

Well they did say that the stingrays barb is poisonious so Im sure if he was stabbed directly in the heart with a poisonious barb he wouldnt have had much of a chance if he had left it in anyway.

So in a round about way he accually killed himself. But think about it if he had not have left it in the Ray would have swam off thus pulling the barb out it's self so either way it was coming out.

Unless he held onto the tail of the stingray, keeping himself and the stingray attatched until someone could come with a knife to cut off the barb.
But I don't think he'd want to sacrifice the life of a stingray for his own.  I could be wrong.

I would think that he would care more for his daughter than he would for a stingray.

I don't think cutting of the StingRays barb would have killed the Stingray, the barb gets stuck in other creatures when attacked in the ocean. These things happen in nature..the barb groes back. He is caring for his daughter by staying alive..or trying to, what good does it do his daughter if he dies.

As I understand it, the barb broke off and he pulled it out on the boat.
