It is estimated to be 9 weeks to pump the water out, who ever decided to build a city with a low point of 18 feet and a high point of 6 feet under sea level was pretty stupid.

...well I doubt there is going to be much 'work' for most citizens for quite some time.  It will probably be well over a month before New Orleans is again suitable for human habitation.

I meant clean-up and rebuilding work; pumping out water, setting up sandbags, laying new water lines gas lines sewerlines. Building houses, hospitals. Medicine and food shipments. All that fun stuff.

I am not sure it was at first, but I do know it is sinking year by year.

There was a National Geographic several months back that had an article about New Orleans and how bad a big hurricane would be.

Mr. B, I'm very glad you and yours are ok.

The city looks absolutely devastated.  Having lived through 3 hurricanes (and almost 4) through a 3-4 week period, I thought I knew what the city was in store for.  I did NOT expect this level of destruction.  I saw an oil derrick that had been pulled inland from the gulf.  Amazing.  The city's infrastructure seems to have been totally destroyed.  I guess the floodwaters stemming from the leveee have mixed with gasoline from abandoned cares and become a very dangerous liquid.  I saw 2 fires in the city this afternoon.  My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in the city.  I can't imagine what the rebuilding plan will be like.  I can only hope these events help protect the city against this type of disaster in the future.  :(

I've wanted to visit the city for some time, but have not gotten the chance to.  I would like to visit the D-Day museum someday.

Are you sure that's not the 'floatel' (floating hotel) that was docked in a nearby shipyard?

No, I've seen two derricks...one that had hit a bridge somewhere and gotten lodged beneath it, another that was was right on the coast of one of the perimeter islands in Alabama, I believe.
