The city is an average of 6 feet below sea level, it would be leveled and flooded at the same time.

Thank God, it looks like dry air got pulled in from Texas, and saved most of New Orleans. I think most everything is going to be O.K.

This had potential to be the worst thing to ever happen to our country, luckily  it wasn't.

It is down from a category 5 to a category 3, hopefully to will slow down more.

The major newsnetworks are reporting now that 80% of New Orleans is under water, due to a levee breaking on the north side of town.

...well I doubt there is going to be much 'work' for most citizens for quite some time.  It will probably be well over a month before New Orleans is again suitable for human habitation.  I would imagine that people will be able to return temporarily to retrive some posessions.  The Jefferson Parish (county) president recently said citizens would be allowed to return temporarily in about a week in order to retrieve 'essentials' which I assume means clothing and whatever, and then will have to leave again and stay out for at least a month.

It will probably be about three months before electricity is restored to a majority of the greater New Orleans area.  Alot of the electric and natural gas infrastructed will probably have to be rebuilt from scratch.  The schools will probably be out for six months, the same is probably true of most commerce.

As for my situation personally, my family is probably better off than most.  We're still in a hotel in downtown Memphis but will likely be leaving in the next two days to stay with family in Alabama.  My little brother will probably be enrolled in school there.  I was to start my 2nd year of college at Tulane University tomorrow, but the whole semester will probably be scrubbed.

Our house is located on the west bank in Algiers.  According to a second hand report, there is two feet of water in my neighborhood, which means there's even odds of a minimal aobut of water in the house.  There is also even odds our house has significant roof damage or the roof is just missing.

Even if that's a total loss I can live with it.  I have few items of sentimental value and most of them are with me.  The big concern for our family is my dad's small business.  He runs three physical therapy clinics, which will be out of commission for a couple months, maybe permanently.

The short of it is New Orleans will never again be the city it was.  I will miss it dearly.

Yeah, this really isn't looking good.  I'm sorry to see it happen.
