Is there any way to go back to 1st person view with the sabre like you could in Jedi Knight 2? I figured there was no sensable reason to take that option out so I know I'm just missing something here.

no, they took it out, with good reason, the saber in jka relies almost completely on acrobatics for most of the moves, you would't be able to do most of those moves in first person, or you would't be able to see where you were attacking, which is just as bad. The motion sickness it would induce wouldn't be good either.

I understand, but I can't play in 3rd. Good thing Gamestop does a 10 day return policy ;)

why can't you play in 3rd, it is different yes, but it is really good for doing acrobatics and saber moves. It just takes some time to get used to.

Some folks just don't like change, and won't put the effort into learning a new and better way to do things. I used to like Dark Forces: Jedi Knight's first person view. Now I could never go back to it. Takes all kinds, I suppose.

^you have a point, but in JK there was no real difference between first and 3rd in term of gameplay and gameplay mechanics, that is less true in JO (they still tried to make most of the stuff work in first person, crippling the flexibility overall) and totally untrue in JA (where they threw out first person and allowed the charecter much more freedom of movement and much more interesting and acrobatic attacks because of it)

Yah, but I like the feeling of first person over fancy looking stuff. 3rd person was just what I always pictured more for the console kids. I don't mind if I can't see what my charactor is doing, I don't have a camera like that above my head right now ;)

Oh well I still have Outcast, it's one of my fav games still. I think Raven did a wonderful job on it.  :D

but the point is that it isn't just fancy looking, it is functional, by going first person you are removing functionality, not just looks.
