Elaborate please: are you using a railing shader / texture or building one out of brushes?

How *I* do it is by either making a simple patch mesh and applying the texture. The only problem with this is that it only blocks player movement on one side. To get around this you can add a simple brush rail on top of it ( not only that, it makes the railing look better ). The other method would be to make a brush with nodraw on all faces except for one, and on that one face you would put the rail texture.

I use 3 simple patch meshes with a rail texture.  The advantage to the patch mesh is that the texture skews with the brush.

Make one for each side of the rail, and one for the top using a matching metal or wood texture.  Make sure the texture you use for the sides is one-sided or you'll get wierd effects.

Note that it won't be see-through between the rails if you run fastvis(nolight).  You must run a light pass to see through transparent textures.

An example of this technique - done for the ceiling beams rather than a railing - can be found here.
