i noticed in screenshots that the glass effects look much nicer than the glass i get, when shattered they appear to be formed of more individual bits of glass

is there any way i can change how detailed broken windows are? i looked in the myconfig file and found "r_glassbits 8" but when i changed it it made no noticeable difference

Do you mean the screenies on the box?. if so i noticed they looked better. but then if you reduce/shrink an image it usualy does.
the only thing i know that you can change is the damage threshold for glass. at default you have to run at it, to break through it. if its damaged of course.
Did you know you can clear a window with the alt~fire pistol?. a grenade does it as well but is a bit noisy...

i doubt its resolution, the glass actually appears to be made up of bigger chips in my version, which wouldn't be affected by resolution

There are a number of console variables you can change that affect the behavior of the glass. Bring down the console and type "glass_" and then hit TAB. You'll see, amongst other cvars, something called "glass_size". It's probably at 8. If you set it to 5 the glass has smaller subdivisions but really large panes can crash the renderer.
