Hey...

i have been making sum basic rooms lately to help practice map making BUT i have a strange problem, my lights look very weird for example i make a simple 512 by 512 room with "one" light in it near the middle and i run ... all is fine but gordans arms and weapons seem almost metallic and if i walk to the darker side of the room he just glows in the dark instead of being consumed by the darkness... ive tried all kinds of the lights and even a head crab to see if it effects models (the head crab was a fleshy metal colour) :S plz help

Ps: when i play the valve maps its fine, so it cant be my game!

i assume that you haven't placed a env_cubemap in this room of yours. just place one somewhere by the light entity and you will see that this strange effect has gone. it's a bit to hard to explain now how they work and what they do. but you have to use them to let your maps look as good as they can look. take for instance water, when you make it without a cubemap above it, (or better; connected to the water surface) is looks sh*t, and with one it looks like it should look. this is always the best example of how cubemaps make your map look better.

Placing cubemaps into your map is only the first step. These will need to be placed correctly for the best results.

You need to activate the cubemaps after you load the map into the game. Once the map has loaded, you need to bring dowm the consol and enter the word “buildcubemaps” (without the quotes), then you should have the correct effects. You will only need to do this once.

There is also a map that you can load in the hammer editor called “sdk_cubemaps.vmf”. This will give you the basics about placing cubemaps.

i only map sp, and as far as i understand it you don't have to do this with sp-mapping, what Baltic.forever says. but you have to do it when you map CS or hl2/mp. just listen to what Baltic says, he knows best!

the env_cubemap works also with a lot of other objects the same way as with the water, for instance metal and other shiny objects./
