How come it takes so long to get through the "PortalFlow"? Sometimes it seems like it gets upto "9. . ." then nothing and this is after waiting for 15 minutes or more.

My specs are amd 3200+ 1gig ram and 6600GT vid card.. this should be able to compile it easy.. ?[banghead]

If you have not done so already use func_detail for all the small brushes like steps window frames and any think that will not block the players view main walls like house walls should be world brushes and sloped roofs should be detail brushes.
By using detail brushes you can speed up your compile time by hours or even days on big maps.
Have a look at this tutorial for a lot more help on this

The link Swampy gave is the best optimizing tut on the net for HL2 as far as I know. This thread is also very useful it goes over most of the samethings but in better detail especially with VIS blocking and func_detail. It also has pictures.

always make nodraw your default texture, and only texture what u can see, also, when u hit compile, put rad and vis in fast, it will compile alot faster, but on camplictaed maps can lowerf fps, ive had no problems, and always compile in fast!
