Is there something Im missing by any chance?? Is there any way to just PAINT the different textures on terrains?? Do I really have to duplicate the terrain, and alpha it to show the different texture underneath it?? Seems so complicated. The BF2 editor had a great terrain tool that you used like Maya artisan to edit the vertexes as well as paint whatever texture you wanted at whatever scale you wanted. [ohwell]

Seriously not trying to put down the developers here....just curious if there is a better way. This stuff is tedious....and I do prefer the Radiant style of building assets along with imported Maya models. Just wish the terrain thing was easier.

Alpah blending is the only way to show 'multiple' textures on a patch, or decals for brushes. You can paint a specific colour (red, green etc...) on a patch though using the terrain editor.

You can vertex paint, but that creates ugly results.

I think the only real way to go is to have layered meshes. You don't need to vertex blend though - there should be fair few decalled textures that have detailed alpha channels which give brilliant results, and will use their own bump and spec maps instead of that of the base texture.
I don't know how BF2 works - are you painting just on the colormap, or can you make edits to the bump and spec maps this way too?

Whatever the specs are for the texture you are painting. You paint texture and bump....but the texture map can have specularity in it. The best part is also constantly being able to "paint away" on the terrain and either raise or lower the terrain area....all while tweaking it to accomdate those buildings and secret passageways, etc.

Limitations were not being able to make caves or tunnels. radiant seems to have a very basic incarnation of the terrain paint....the developers just need to tweak it a little further so it all happens ala Maya's Artisan/Sculpt brush.

Yeah BSP engine based games have the worst editors (mostly GtkRadiant)... Cant believe COD4 developers still worked of that! Come on they coulda made own mapping tool? Are atleast implement texture paint... I guess they really liked mapping that way ... [banghead]
