Well, considering most astronomers referr to it as "the inner planets, the gas giants, and the kepler belt objects" it's really just for offical classification and school kids.

I think dropping Pluto makes more sense. It never really deserved to be called a planet. And besides, what about Charon? Do we call it a moon even though it is clearly not? A moon orbits a planet, but Pluto and Charon orbit each other. If Pluto's a planet, so is Charon.

Pluto was discovered and labeld a planet before we had a clear system for labeling them; therefore it gets grandfathered in on a technicallity. The exception that makes the rule.
