I'm glad the Italians in Italy didn't make me order in Italian. That would have really sucked. I'd say let the market decide in this case. If he declares English only and his customers stop showing up... even the English speaking ones... he learns a valuable (civics?) lesson.

That's different than this case, though. He's concered with immigrants not bothering to learn English. If you moved to Italy, would you expect everyone to cater to you in English, or would you learn Italian?

Let's see, having been in Rome, Paris, Munich, Zurick... I never met anybody that didn't speak English. Funny, eh? But I can go into most big cities in the US today and find lots of people who don't speak English.

I'd learn Italian.

When I lived in China, I learned Chinese.

I think that the implication that there are people who expect to be catered to in their own language is ridiculous.

It's more likely that there are people who do not have easy access to the resources (time, money or even a basic education in their own language) to be more probable.
