I'm not saying that they're doing it right, but what do you guys think, that Kirk graduated the Academy and immediately became captain of the Enterprise?  During the 11 years and four months before Kirk became captain, I assume he was working his way up the ranks.  It would still have been possible for Kirk and Spock to have been at the Academy together, if the only piece of information we were given was that Spock served for 11 and a third years under one captain before another one took over.  I know it's not, but what did Kirk do in between when he graduated and when he took command of the Enterprise?

All the info that's been available on this story (its been batted around for quite a while now) has had them together as students. Sounds like they're rewriting history.

There are Star Trek novels about their academy days.

That's what I was thinking.

I say make this movie... include lots of short skirts, cheerleaders, drunken space-fraternity parties etc...

I think this article is only speculating that the original story we heard is the one they will be making.

With any luck at all; they WILL be moving forward.

I'm looking for some crossover. A few characters from DS9/Voyager/TNG and a little closure to all three. (All three needed it.)

I agree, kirk and spock *could* have gone to the academy together, but why kirk became a captain faster then spock is beyond me.
Then again Tuvok served for 80 years or so and only rose to Lt.... Ranks are wierd.  Then again vulcans don't make captain very easily and back in the TOS era, captain didn't mean you had your own ship.
(spock was referred to as 'captain spock' many times.)

There's something that I just read in the official press release that I thought was highly important.

Quote
Abrams' producing partners from Lost, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk, are cited as being producers on "Trek XI." This project is separate from the previously rumored script developed by Eric Jendresen and overseen by Rick Berman. The former Star Trek producer is not involved in this project.

Berman gone is what we've been asking for for years now, and all I'm seeing are complaints?  Give it the benefit of the doubt.  This is the creator of Lost and Alias, after all.  He knows how to write/direct a good script.  I'm not wild on the prequel idea either, but I'm more than happy to see a non-Berman produced Star Trek in the works.  And don't give me that "the producer doesn't mean it's good or bad" line, we all know the right producer can do wonderful things (Ira Behr - DS9, Michael Piller - DS9, Ron Moore - BSG, JJ Abrams - Lost & Alias, etc.) and the wrong producer can do terrible things (Berman & Braga - all screwed up Trek).

I think that's a good point, that Berman being gone might mean a good prequel.  Bringing in someone entirely new is more likely to mean an entire reimagination of the franchise, at least a lot more likely than if Berman had stayed on.  We should be rejoicing at that part, at least.
