I stumbled across this site:Clicky

First there was the CPU, then GPU...then PPU??  Its been said that if a PPU was developed, it would be like  "Completeing the triangle".  (Notice the triangle and 3 spheres orbiting around a single sphere)

Back when I did some reading on this subject, a PPU would be able to easily calculate more than 20,000 interacting objects at once, compaired to maybe 200 or so objects that can be calculated on the CPU currently.  This would make possible for incredibly interactive enviroments. But even if BFG were introducing the first PPU, how long do you think it would take before the tech is taken full advantage of?  ???

Opinions?

PPU stands for Physics Processing Unit.  Used primarily for games, I'd wager.  But if the tech advances and becomes somewhat affordable, I guaruntee we'll have them as a requirement in the next generation of games (3+ years down the road).  They'll probably become standard equipment in the post-360/PS3/Revolution generation of consoles too.

Ah, physics.  Me thinks Half-Life 2 really set the bar.
Just think, with an actual physics processor, holodecks are one step closer.

Im thinking a few years from now video cards will have a double or triple dye design, that is, the PPU will reside on the video card itself.  Rather than being on an entirly seperate card...
