So what's the difference between DVD+R and DVD-R?  I always assumed it was just a stupid gimick type thing, like "Look at us, we have a + in the name of our media format, we're better than those bastards with minuses."

That sounds about right.

I tried to do a good bit of research on this subject when I first got my burner, and that's about what I came up with.  I did read alot that -R is slightly more widely compatible so that's what I use.

There is a difference somewhere. I found that one out the hard way, got the wrong discs and my computer wouldn't write to them. Its some subtle difference in the way the disc is encoded, I think.

Think more VHS vs Betamax though this time there wasn't just one company supporting one of the formats.

+r was reported to be slightly better but more expensive when first released than -r
Ram was supported by the -r crowd
I've got a Panasonic DVD recorder which uses -r & Ram beacuse I liked the features of Ram more than +r/w and a Lite-on drive in my pc which supports all but ram.

Agent this is what the writeable side of a ram disk looks like  and does work just like a HD in the way it can play while recording

Some of the basic differences in types

I got some hi-space disks which work well in both drives and were very cheap

Ya, exactly like Ryo said, DVD-RAM discs are like hard drives.
You can do things like edit a text file that is on the disc w/o having to re-burn it.
(I only have 3 DVD-RAM discs, because they are really expensive, I use them to back-up my hard drive and store important files should I need to reformat)

DVD-R and DVD+R are just two competing formats. Like Blu-Ray and HD-DVD only much more similar to each other technologically. Personally I use DVD-R because I find it's more widely compatible.

I myself have got a Lite-on DVD burner, and have never had any problems with it. I even flashed the firmware on it to make it think it is the model above it, and still, no problems. I also swear by the 8x Verbatim DVD+R's that I use. I got a spool of 100 from newegg for about $25.00. :p
