To make absolutely sure no Automatic Updates get installed, just run XP-Anti-Spy....

The Automatic Update service can be completely uninstalled using it :)

SP2 changes a lot of things is that compatable with it yet? Microsoft doesn ot want auto updates truned off thats one of the first things virus do so SP2 probably will not let the work untell after it is updated.

Sure you can, while this Service pack is touted as a security pack, it still doesn't change the fact that Windows was never designed with security in mind.
Nor was the internet, hence the problems.

yeah, how long will it be, 1 month, 2 months, a day, till the virus folk find ways around all this?
You're right, in 2 months some guy with no job and no life who has spent 24hrs a day prying all the components apart that he can will find an error to exploit.

@Alpharaptor:
I've been using SP2 since before it was even public (yes, I had an illegeal beta) and it aint as buggy as these guys make it sound. It's a good update, I reccomend it (that said, no someone is gonna flame me most likely)

@Harles:
Why the heck would you uninstall auto updates? Some of the big viruses over the past few years have exploited holes in Windows that were patched long before, but since most people werent bothering to update, well, you saw the results...

I agree with Cox.  As I have previously stated, I ran into ZERO problems.  All my games work flawlessly, and so does all my applications.  Remember, the list says that some appz/games MIGHT not work.  I'm using at least a dozen of those without a problem.

As for the Automatic Updates, I like to turn them off.  BUT I check very VERY often for new security patches.  I like to do the process manually.  But for most people (with less knowledge of such things) it's a good idea to have it turned on.

I don't like to have Windows downlaoding stuff without me telling it to...

I update Windows via the website regularily, I much prefer it that way. I don't have to install any of the crap, and I can only download the stuff I need....

As for SP2, i'll dl it, but not until an updated patched uxtheme.dll comes out, since I don't want to give up my windows themes...

There's already one Harles...

Patched uxtheme.dll: HERE

Use "Replacer" to overwrite the original with the new one: HERE

Just follow the instructions in the readme.txt.  Works like a charm...
