JK2 was probably my favorite game, and I have always enjoyed this series, including JA.  I played JK2 all the time.  I bought JA the day it came out.  That said, with the video-card issues and more importantly, the LACK OF A WORKING SERVER BROWSER this thing is worthless.  I use the third party junk, but most people don't play.  It took a while before I found out that was why there weren't servers.  It was pretty frustrating.  The lack of support for a game with issues that should have stopped it's release is enough to make one angry.  That threads are closed because of it is another insult.  People claim it's all Lucas Arts, not Raven, but really, why should I or any other person who shelled out a bunch of money for a ridiculously non-functional product care?  If what I hear others say has any veracity at all, Raven and Lucas Arts have just lost a lot of future business, even if the customers are addicted to the franchise.  Even they eventually realize they're being duped and cashed in on.

Couldn't this just have been posted in one of the previous rant threads? I mean what can we all reply with that hasn't been said before?

Dear Raven staff...

I played JK2 and EF:Voy religiously from the day they came out, both patched and patchless... and this game is by far my favorite of the three.  It's definitely the best out-of-the-gate initial release I've seen from you so far, and I'm sure that any patch will show the same care and professionalism.

Just because people who love this game don't come here and post, don't think they aren't out there.  We are.

Why bother?... because if one is willing to look beyond the fact that it isn't JK2, and accepts the gameplay changes for what they are, it's an amazingly fun game to play.

I'm not suggesting gameplay changes!!!!  I'm not one of those whiners.  I like JA.  The SP was great.  I'm perfectly fine with MP balance, but what I want is a game where people actually can play on the internet.  You know, that thing we're communicating over right now?

Yeah... it's the same circular conversation that's been happening over on the Lucasforums for the last month.

Qtracker

All Seeing Eye

One is freeware, one is unlimited shareware.  I have no problems finding one of the 300+ servers online, nor with being able to physically play over the internet.  At anytime, day or night, I can always find an enjoyable match in just about any gametype, and have logged around 150 hours in online JA play to date.

Anybody who has experience in Q3 based games knows that there are alternative server browsers available, so the ingame browser problem isn't as devastating an issue as everyone makes it out to be.  The only people being affected by the ingame browser issue are the "newbies with no skill" that the community seems to despise so much anyway, and the server admins paying for time that want more people to come play.  In every other Raven game that has a functioning ingame browser, the majority of the community still opts to use one of the alternative browsers because they are better.

For the server admins, until the patch is released it might not be a bad idea to add "Visit www.qtracker.com or www.udpsoft.com to see the other 300 servers your missing!" to your MOTD page, so when your server does show up the visitors are given the message.  Also, use an easily memorable name that doesn't sound too much like a clan server... "Fairy Forest" is going to be more easily remembered than "{JLPT}Soxxorz | OT-W3Ownz" will be... might be why FF is always full.  A welcoming and memorable name goes a long way to attracting new people.

Now if the issue is that you actually don't have a good internet connection, well I can't help you there...

Uh, ok. You do realize that people without previous experience can learn and eventually become good at the game too, right?  I know about those programs, but a lot of people buying the game don't.  At the very beginning of this, I also just thought there were hardly any servers.  I mean, if you don't want anyone new to play these games and a bunch of kids to save up money to get this and then wonder why they can't play, or if you think it's just fine that the multiplayer feature as such doesn't work, recognize that you don't speak for everyone.

You're right, I don't speak for everyone.  I simply speak for the segment of the community too busy having fun with the game to come here and say something nice about it from time to time - the segment which erroneously appears to be in the minority around here.

I realize the ingame server browser needs to be fixed, and a bunch of new people are missing out. I'm simply suggesting that server admins can try and do something about it by spreading the word and using a welcoming approach to attract repeat visitors once they do show up in the ingame browser for a short time - rather than simply complaining about it and waiting around for it to get fixed.

I just checked ASE... right now there's 228 servers with 1280 players on them.  That's 1280 people on a Monday evening who don't seem to care much about the ingame browser not working.

HOLA!  SI SENOR!  There are people playing.  How many more would be?  Why is the fact that some people have been lucky enough to hear about a workaround for a problem many might not know exists an excuse for a total lack of support.  Why would you have cause to believe this thing might ever be fixed.  I too am enjoying the game a lot!  You infer way too much.

The dedicated server is buggy and constantly crashes in Linux, FreeBSD, and Windows.

If they don't fix it, the game will die very quickly. It's already dying. All the fun servers are dropping like flies and switching to other games.

Yeah... it's the same circular conversation that's been happening over on the Lucasforums for the last month.

The problem you fail to see is the droves of users that are turning away from the game because they unlike some of us do not go out and find the solutions...

I have never in my life played a multiplayer game where the ingame server browser has been so broken.   This list is like the spinal cord.  Without it this game is not dead but basically paralized.  Yes you will have some good players playing using those programs.  But really, do you expect a game to have out of the gate, a broken server browser?  And then not to fix it right away?  How long has it been now?  And its almost like you have no clue on what it takes to run a server and to spend money on a server so you can host a nice public server but only to find out that people do not join it because 95% of them do not see your server.  Yep I could have put a link in MOTD but I'd say about 90% of the people that see it will still not go and dl that other software.  ####!  This #### is supposed to be built into the game!
