Has anyone ever tried scripting/modding for a demo cam? I've recorded some demos and then during playback you can do things like cg_thirdperson, --angle, --range and so forth. You can write scripts that would make some pretty cool looking videos. Would it be possible to add spectate mode or even take it further?

I've taken a look at Warsow and they have a democam for demo playback that allows you to freespec during demo playback. You can do a whole lot more in demo mode in warsow.

Quake 3 has Quake3 Movie maker's edition (q3mme) which does a lot of the same things warsow allows you to do. and more.


The only difference is that cod isn't opensource. D:

there is a demo player for cod4, but you can't be a free spectator. not sure if you can turn thirdperson on in cod2, 'cause the cvar is cheat protected and you can't run demos in devmode (no /devdemo command).

i worked on a camera flight script for cod2, to move the camera along given nodes, not finished yet. it's possible to fly around and record using Xfire or Fraps. But not for demos i think...

I was stumped on how to do demos in devmode too. But I kept playing around with it and I came up with this.

To run demos in devmode you have to first run the map in devmode. Then disconnect and then run the demo. Make sure sv_cheats is set to 1 too.

Thats how I did it for coduo.


Don't fraps and xfire record a single view only though? With demos it appears to be multiview mode. I was wondering if you could even change the chase taget in a demo somehow. It seems like it records the game play and not just the fov and camera angles.

Fraps and xfire records whatever is on your screen


Demos record each entitys info such as origin, angle, what its doing (moving ect) and model, when you play the demo it plays what each entity did, so client controlled stuff (thirdperson, fov) can be changed because the demo doesnt record those kind of things.

works for CoD2 as well, thx!

but my fly cam script doesn't have any effect on the demo (prolly not executed at all). hence, the whole cg_* stuff and +scores work while replaying the demo, but you can not spectate freely :/

Funny thing, but if you're execing the script from a bind make sure the key works during the demo. I don't think any of the keys on the main part of the keyboard work if depressed during a demo. (like to execute a bind) I do know that the number pad keys work though (KP_). I think function keys work too.

You can also check the console to see if the script is executed or not.


For the script you were working on, did you add camera nodes during the demo playback? I'd be interested to see how your script works if you don't mind sharing. :D
