Hello,

some guy told me that the Q3 engine is for free now (no license is needed). It sounded pretty weird to me, so I guess it isn't true?

btw, are there other engines where no license is needed? just wondering

Theres are a few open source engines out there which have alot of support for them but are a little outdated now, to get with the times, you have to pay big bucks.

The idTech3 engine (read Quake3 Team Arena or Q3TA) is Open Source, mind that what you are able to get isn't the final thing; there are bunch of things which haven't been finished by the time the source have been release publicly.
So yes you can find the modtool, but since then id software have developed it a bit more, so have different users of the code (including which ever studio developed MoH:AA and IW and Co.). You can find around the world wild web a couple of well enhanced modtool based around the original code, as you can find other game engine based on the idTech3 game engine that make use of the tool.

But as far as the source of quake3 TA goes, don't expect to be able to run anything just out of the box, as this is very much a dev source code and "feature" a lot of unfixed bug. Not only that but we are talking as well about the source CODE (as opposed to the binaries), not the assets, so if you can still compile the source you have to own Quake3 TA to be able to run it, or make -erf- all the changes in the code to use some other assets .... this is a titanic workload that only a team can eventually achieve. You are better off with looking at the community version of this code called ioquake.

If you are still interested in this field I guess that google is and will be your best friend. And a minimum programming knowledge is required. ;)
