Taking a level design class at university taught by a Midway Games LD (worked on Stranglehold). We're using Gears in the class, which is a new turn for the game classes so it's new for me (although I've used UT2004 editor before but a while back).

Anyone here level design on Gears of War?
Any good tutorials you can suggest?
Is the learning curve hard from Ut2004 to GoW?

The class is going to be more about gameplay rather than eye candy levels, which is great since most non-devs focus on eye candy first/only. I think we're going to be making small missions, so that'll be cool too.

Just have to find a copy of GoW for PC, I heard it's kind of hard to find them nowadays.

From what I've seen there shouldn't be to much of a difference with the two. I'll take a look around and see what I can come up with. I have done a lot of work with the engine as well but not with the new.... version.

I'll let you know when I find something.

Cheers

Really nice, thanks. I'll have to forward those to classmates.

I like the http://www.avld.org one, really hoping to get into Kizmet. Is there a way to freehand script without using the visual tool, as I wouldn't want to be working with Kizmet in a complex level with a whole bunch of bubbles on the GUI. [crazy]

Picked up a copy, went to GameStop across the street and they had to call a few other locos before they found a store that had it in stock.

The game runs pretty good on my PC which was surpising, looks almost like the 360 version (most settings are maxed by default, 2-3 are medium). 1440x900 resolution, (2) 7800GTs SLI + 2.1 GHz AMD X2 Dual Core.
Editor runs pretty smooth too but stock maps take like 15-25 secs to load up.

Hey Iron Cross, do you know why there are so many .war files for the SP maps? There's like 20-25 files per SP map, I don't know what they all do. I opened the ones with SP_???_P.war and those seem to have everything in it, not sure what the others are, maybe layers inside the SP_???_P.war map?

I noticed that, and I started to open some of them to check what they are.

Looks like somehow they have each map divided in to sections
and seems like those sections load up as soon the player advance in the game, maybe they do that to reduce the loading time.

if you check some of those war files, you will see in some of them just part of a level and in others just background buildings ,I think they´re called in game via triggers/ checkpoint or someting.

so when you start a mission, the game loads just part of the hole level, is like create a hole level for COD4 and divide it in ¨portals/ cells¨ but using differents map files.

I get crashes sometimes running a custom map (DLed a couple SP maps from over at the Epic forums) or trying my map in the editor.

Something about g4wLive.exe error.
I searched the Epic forums and there seems to be no sure fix for it. I think Ill try signing out of Live before testing custom content.
