I have an idea to use Half life 2 engine for a fantasy story, not original by itself I know, but the twist is, which obviously I cant say. But I have some questions;

1. Can u completely change all the assets within this game, that includes animations, models, textures, hud?
2. Where are good spots for info/tutorials on modding HL2?
3. I presume this game allows for custom animation but what if I didnt have time to do the animation myself what sort of rig would the game need
4. Can I make this game 3rd Person?
5. Could I make text based replys and answers like in an RPG?
6. Lastly the game I have in mind is a low poly (around 2000 tris for characters) third person story based slasher so I am not sure if this is the right engine, whats yer opinions?

Thanks.

1. yes, you can completely change everything with the right tools. The tools for changing assets do not come with the game.

2. links:

3. Maya and patience

4. yes. google search for some other mods that have used this option. From there you should be able to find assistance with 3rd person.

5. May through changes in the code. Otherwise I can't easily think of how to do this.

6. Pick an engine based on a game you like. It will be less of a burden when you run into problems... which you will regardless of the engine you choose.

I prefer to stick with (at this point in time) either HL2 or Quake 4. They have the best support communities which is very important if you are new to mods and modding.
