Hi it's me again,
I got a problem that's hard to describe...I've built that mp-map - it's nearly finnished - and I've created a skybox (the texture is tetures/skies/act_3_network) and the fitting light effects like the sun and ambient lighting BUT now I've built an underground path wich should be illum,inated just by the local lights, not by the ambient light. I think I've tried at least 10 different methods but still the ambient light strikes through and my secret path looks like...something
PLZ help...

yeah. that;s the problem with ambient light. This light will light up the whole world rather than the surrounding area alone. I do mention some things in Quake 4 Mods For Dummies on lighting. Not sure if you saw it.

What I recommend is for you to fake your ambient lighting effect with a second or even third light. You have a main light in one corner and an ambient light in the adjacent corner at a much lower intensity. This will fill in the dark places and create softer shadows just like sunlight with ambient lighting. However this method will avoid putting that ambient lighting where you don't want it.

yeah I did read the chapter concerning ambient lighting - can it be that the detail levels are more important than I thought because I'got the sun with a level of 10 (simple nofalll texture) and in the opposit corner of the map the ambient light which hs the same teture but also a detail level of 10 because if I would set it to 5 like it's written in the book, the light doesn't work - only with the level of 9 and higher...[confused]

OK. The reason you don't see the light at detail level 5 is because you have a slower computer. Lights be default have a light level (aka r_lightdetaillevel n) of 10. This level of lighting can be seen by everyone. The lower the number, the higher the specs that are required by your computer.

The game determines your computer specs based on the video settings you have for the game.

The more lights you throw into the game, the more stress your computer goes through in order to display those lights. Ambient lighting is a secondary lighting effect which is why I suggested a level of 5.. middle of the road.

Go ahead and keep the level high to something like 9.
