Could be the whole exchange rate thing? $80USD is extremely expensive. In the shops, most games retail for around $100NZD.
I know when I bought the valve action pack for 100USD on Steam it ended up costing me $150NZD.
Maybe this is why I have not bought any other games on steam as it feels like were getting overcharged.
I believe Steam prices vary depending on locations. For example a game in the US will cost $50, but in Russia the equivalent price will be $60 based on region. Its bullshat I know, but thats just how it works I guess. Probably importation costs, etc, but Valve just milks up the money.
