The Surface website has posted a page of great mapping tips for RTCW. Although these 40 tips may be specifically for the Wolfenstein game, they are quite helpful for all Q3 editing.

Planet Soldier is hosting a new mapping competition for SoF II.
The competition will focus on mapping with a winner and a runner-up. You will have 2 months to make your map and send it in to PlanetSoldier. They will then hold a vote and the top 5 maps will then be judged by some key "ravenites"...

HEAT, a Soldier of Fortune II mod inspired by the crime saga of the movie with the same name, is on the edge of completion, according to some anonymous source (Fragger, I think...).
In their own words:
