The Future of MODSonline

Hello MODSonline Clan.

MODSonline has been online for over 20 years. Many of its members have grown up here learning about modding games, experimenting with making games and then moving into the game development industry. It's been a true honor to be a part of everyone's lives. While it's hard for us to let go, we are now contemplating the idea of closing up shop.

We'd love to hear from you if you have anything to say. I hope we've enriched your lives.... [ There's more ]

Muhammad currently works at tryarch and is, along with the rest of the guys over there is pushing through to get the latest interation of Call of Duty.

Here's what went on;

GTA 5 Close to full scale modding.

Modders are already starting to chip away at GTA 5, but this is arguably the biggest breakthrough so far: OpenIV, a modding toolset used to access and edit Grand Theft Auto IV and Max Payne 3, has been updated to support GTA 5. While you shouldnt get too excited about this right now, as the program does not allow for editing of the games files. But if we know the pc modding community it is only a matter of time.

Valve, VAC, and trust: by Gabe Newell

Trust is a critical part of a multiplayer game community - trust in the developer, trust in the system, and trust in the other players. Cheats are a negative sum game, where a minority benefits less than the majority is harmed.
There are a bunch of different ways to attack a trust-based system including writing a bunch of code (hacks), or through social engineering (for example convincing people that the system isn't as trustworthy as they thought it was).

Developer Walkthroughs

Infinity Ward scripter (now at Respawn) Mackey McCandlish is doing walkthroughs of stuff he worked on starting from CoD1. Some really insightful information both tech and design wise on how CoD came to be and is designed – you just have to be patient with him dying a lot (especially in Chateau), but he gets better in later videos.

Chateau -- CoD1 prototype / pre-proof of concept level for making a WWII game.
