How to use water textures and tools for basic water effects.
Water, by Foxhound

Thanks to Foxhound for the work put into this tutorial.

In this tutorial I'll be covering how to use water textures and tools for basic water effects ie: A pool. Included in this tut will be a .map file attached and should foyleman deem it need be placed here then so be it, if not don't hesitate to contact me via email.

I'm assuming that you have the SDK set up correctly and that everything is in the default locations.

1. The water effect is pretty simple to get a grip on for the most part you have 2 things that you need to remember when working with water or anything else for that matter:
  1. If the water texture you want to use is not highlighted by a white box you will not get the effect your after.
  2. If the texture you want to use does not have brackets around the text above the texture you will not get the proper effect
In other words if it has both of these items above, go for it.

2. First off create your standard room as per foylemans tut and then using your imagination, create a little area for your pool. As per pic (wt1.jpg). In this you can also see that I've also added the basic textures to the room as well.

3. From this point there are two ways that you can achieve the pool effect the first one being:
  1. Go to the textures menu and select tools. once the tools textures are loaded find one called, [ _nodraw_water]. Then using that tool/texture, create your pool (wt2.jpg) and place it in the proper location (wt3.jpg). once in place then you just have to select the texture for the top of the water only. In this case I chose [water_pool_finca] from the common texture pack, it looks just like plain ole water (wt4.jpg) but you can use any of the others should you want.
  2. The second way is a bit more complicated but has the same effect overall.
Go to the textures menu and select the common textures pack, once loaded up select [water_pool_finca] and then create your brush as in the example above. once created you will then have to add a no draw texture ie: [_nodraw_water] to the five sides (wt5.jpg) that aren't showing to the player because if you don't you'll get a mirror effect that won't allow that water effect your after.
You can choose any of the two methods above and should I come across any other way I'll create an update.

If they're any questions please feel free too send an e-mail or better yet ask in the forums at http://www.MODSonline.com where there are plenty of people there to give a hand if you need it.

Good luck

Cheers
