Submitting Your Custom Maps And Other Materials

I have created this instruction to help you publish your maps more easily and quickly. All submissions should contain the same information, and the check list below will help you to remember it all. once all of this information is sorted out, you should contain it all in a zipped file to make the file more easily downloadable. The easier it is, the more people will like it and the more eager they may be to obtain more files created by you.

Follow the list:

  1. Be sure to include the most important file of all, the bsp file. It's the reason you worked so hard.
  2. Using notepad, create a text file that describes what you did, how you did it, anything that users should be made aware of, and the installation instructions. Installation may seem obvious to you, but may be confusing to someone else. I have created an online template for you to use. All you need to do is fill in the blanks and include it in your zip.
  3. Make sure that you provide all of the supporting files necessary to view and play your map the way that you intended. Textures for the sky and map, custom sounds, and any other files.
  4. Once all of these files are gathered, place them in a zipped document. I like to use WinZip since it is free and the most commonly used. I have also seen files packed using rar, but this is not as universal.

When creating your zip file, I have found that packaging all of the files with "Full Path Info" (a feature found in winzip) makes it easier for the end user to install. I created a folder called c:base (to refer to the folder called c:Program FilesRavenSOFbase) and placed all the files in there using the proper directory structure (textures in c:basetexturesfoldername, etc.).
  5. Depending on the size fo your file, you should finally mail it to the correct website managers. Some email's cannot be received if they exceed 2Mb in size. If this is the case with your zipped file, you will need to either find a server to keep it for a little while, or make arrangements for another form of transfer with the recipient.

Make sure that you are sending it to the right person who posts the files on the website. Not all contacts on a particular webpage will be able to post your new file. I have comprised a list of places at the top of this page to mail your files.
