SLIDING DOORS

By baltic.forever

This short tutorial will teach you how to quickly create a door that will slide when used.

If you just want to know how to get the doors to work, then skip through this tutorial to "SETTING UP THE ENTITIES"

You will find that a lot of this tutorial has been taken from the "ROTATING DOORS" tutorial.

Load map sp_tute_blank_map1 into the editor first. You can download it HERE

1. Place an "info_player_start" in the map.

2. click on "file" then "save as" and save the map as "sp_sliding_door"

3. Make a brush 64 units wide, 128 units tall, and 8 units thick (dimensions are in "grid units")

4. While you still have the brush selected, press "S" on the keyboard to bring up the surface inspector, and enter the following into the "texture" box at the top.
textures/shop/door1

5. Press the "Enter or Return" key, and you're texture should look like this (picture 1). If it doesn't, then use the "H Shift" and "V Shift" keys in the surface inspector until it does (picture 2) then click on "Done".
That's the door taken care of. Now onto the walls.

1. Create three brushes that surround the doors.

2. Select all three brushes then press "S" on the keyboard and enter the following into the texture box.

texture/shop/cinderblock2

You're wall and doors should look something like this (picture 3). Save your map at this stage, before continuing.

Now onto the important part.

SETTING UP THE ENTITIES

1. Select the door (shift and left click).

2. Right click in the 2d window, and select "door_sliding".

3. Press "N" and enter the following "key and value" settings then press the "Enter or Return" key on the keyboard;

key speed
value 50 // {this is how fast the door will open and close, default is 100}

key angles
value 0 180 0 // {this is the direction the door will move}

key dmg
value 10 // {this will inflict a small amount of damage if the player blocks the door, when closing}

key lip
value 4 // {this is how much of the door (in grid units) that the player sees once fully opened, default is 8}

4. select the following spawnflag boxes;

usable // {the door must be used to open}

auto_close // {the door will automatically close after 3 seconds}

There are other options that can be set. There is a brief description of each setting in the top window of the "Entity editor".

That's it. Just compile the map and start a single-player game. When the main screen appears, hold down the "shift" key and press "~" to bring down the consol. Type in map sp_sliding_door and press the "Enter" key to load the map.
