Will you be switching to Windows 7?
Posted on Fri. Jun. 26, 2009

Windows 7 is on the way whether you like it or not. It's definitely an improvement over Vista, but it does mark the start of the end for Windows XP, or at least that's what Microsoft wants.

So, since it's coming, what are your plans? Do you plan to stock up on Windows XP license keys or be one of the first to jump aboard the OS change?

Looking forward to a supported 64 bit
I'd like to say that I'm ready for the switch, but I'm worried about driver support. I've been playing with beta versions of 32 bit and like it a lot. However, I have noticed a few issues that get in the way of recording audio. That's a big issue when trying to handle a big show like MODSonair.

I want to take advantage of the higher memory limits of 64 bit, but I've heard that not all the hardware drivers are supported. I don't want to make a move to an OS that isn't going to support all my hardware.

So for now, I'm running 32 bit Windows 7 beta AND Windows XP. I will move to Win7 when it comes out, but I just don't know which version.

When I NEED it
If a Game comes out that I really want and I have to have Windows 7 to play it.... then I might consider it... but I would not rush out to buy it.

I'm going to cling on to windows XP for as long as possible, never had any problems with it and it does everything I need it to do.

Agreed XP is probally the best OS ever made, if does anything you want it to do, with a few exceptions. Why buy another OS when the one you have is fine?

P.S. Macs suck [rocking]

x64 isn't bad
Like I have posted in the past, I like windows 7 64 bit. It has some issues, but I think it has kept my file management more organized and easier to get to. I also have found drivers for all of my things, and all but video, sound and printer were added on install!

Video: ATI Radeon HD 4870
Sound: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro Series
Printer: Lexmark x7170 Series

Only BIG thing I hate... sound "what you hear" problems. Also, run the basic theme. Keeps you from DirectX errors when you start you games :P

I've had an almost flawless experience with Windows 7 x64. I say almost because my old webcam doesn't work and sometimes my Razer Copperhead likes to do weird things with my mouse pointer.

I wanted something other than XP. It's nice, but it was getting a bit boring. I don't understand that logic myself, but I am glad I gave W7 a chance. It's clean, easy to use and isn't busting my balls with BSOD's every 5 minutes like an unnamed operating system at release date.

The downsides? Well other than the webcam, everything else seems to be fixed. I did have to installed Virtual Machine to run XP however, when visual studio refused to install as it wanted servcie pack 3 for XP. I set it to run in compatibility mode for that setup, but still nothing. I can only hope things like that are sorted once it hits the shelves.

Overall, I'm happy with everything so far and I am pretty sure I am going to buy it once it hits the shelves, or when the RC stops working and the price is a little lower. There are even talks about getting a copy from work for free from the Microsoft Guru. Woop.

Windows 7 Release Candidate works like a charm here. We all will need the x64 version this time or with a new upcoming Operating Systems, because 32 bits can only have a maximum RAM of 4 GB :)

Windows 7
I have Vista Home Premium x64, i dont need 7. When Vista is old like Windows 2000, i have to change.

Big Hassle
Only if I need it, by the way, installing windows 7 will be a big hassle, I have to install drivers and everything. I don't have time for that. I am sticking with my trusty XP, the best and stable windows.

Vista, I used, but it sux. Even if windows 7 is better, I just don't have time to install drivers.

vista [sniper] [machine_gun]vista

lol I don't mean it. Vista is still good with those new features. Anyway, go XP![rocking][thumbs_up][smokin]

W7 is the best option compared to WinXP and Vista. I don't encourage anyone to do the change, but instead to try it out on a newish hardware. It does make an awful lot of difference compared to the two previous opus of windows. :)

Uh, where the hell is the Vista selection? Not everyone sucks with computers. You all just hate it due to the bad release. I will probably stick with Vista for a while yet. When I reformat my comp for whatever reason in the future is when I will swap to 7

i'd preferably hold on for as long as possible to XP as it's been like a friend to me, always works, no new stuff and always reliable.

and in so far, theres way more support for XP and i'm also worring about drivers and if i would still be able to play all those bought games..

XP forever!

The pre-orders offer started yesterday (15th) in the UK and already most stores have sold out of their allocation.

My order for Home Premium from Amazon (.co.uk obviously) was £44.97 (about $75) - bargain of the decade.

xp vs 7
I've been sticking with XP mostly because I don't want any problems with my mapping editor coduo radiant. Is anyone using them together and are you having any problems? That will probably be the deciding factor for me.
Posted by GomerPyle on Wed. Jul. 22, 2009

$75 bucks in the UK? Costs an arm and your left gonad in Australia. Ripped off again. XP lives a little longer.

Macs suck?
Running Windows 7 RC (Build 7100) here. XP ain't bad, but would the 64 bit version recognize all 12 GB of DDR3 RAM, and all 16 virtual cores on this 8-core machine (Dual Xeon X5550s here)?

There's nothing like watching all 16 cores fire up in Task Manager to crank out a map lighting compile in 1 minute flat.

Oh, and did I mention this is on a Mac? But I guess it must suck, huh.

Windows 7
Frankly Xp is the worst OS ever, everyone complains that "omg vista sucks"," it doesnt work" xp is better, no its not. Vista and Windows 7 only sucks because A. Your computer sucks B. You dont know how to use a computer C.You never do a disk cleanup or claen your computers software or D. You dont know how to proerly setup your custom computer. Windows 7 is the best OS out thier, microsoft has really made a comback with this OS. Ive had the Beta since it first came out and now i have the RC. I have already pre-ored my copy for 50 which is cheaper than XP which is at 99$. I have had 0 problems with windows 7 ive never had to install any driver becuase it installed them automatically.

BTW i use radiant and i have no problems with it and Windows 7.

Vista Does Suck
Vista does suck my brother has it on his laptop, i know how to use a computer (obviously) My Computer Owns, Does codwaw in High Detail. Xp is just the best OS and it always will be.

Keep in mind that Windows 7 is was cheaper in Europe because we don' have an upgrade option. We can only buy the full version.

Windows 7
Hate to brake it to you all, but XP isn't the Best OS anymore!
I have XP Pro, I love it, but looking at the FAX, Vista is lill better (don't like Vista), and W7 is better then Vista, I'm looking at getting W7 after i move in a year, Only cuz the FAX says it is better then XP, and Vista...

When I get W7, i'm still going to make it look like XP, just cuz I don't need all that crap that comes with it, but W7 is faster, and better looking, and I can run Mod, and Map making tools on it better, my Xp pro keeps freezing on me..

Macs don't count in this convo
@NSGod
For the purpose of this site, Macs do suck. I can play, make maps and outright enjoy the latest games in the PC market. This site is dedicated to just that. Usually the Mac owner has to wait for such an option and that's a new occurrence. Macs didn't even get games past 5 years ago.
And yes, I own a Mac too and I do use it for game development. But I use it in order to make games for the iPhone. I wouldn't try modding CoD or Quake on it. That's PC still territory.

And you want all those cores lighting up on the PC or more than 4Gb of Ram available? Install a 64bit version of Windows.

XP should be 'the best' and well polished, its been out for what, 8 years now?

Windows 7 x64
I've been running Windows 7 x64 build 7600 for almost 2 weeks now and its running flawless with all my games and I have no compatibility issues at all with any of my software.....WinXP, my old friend, I'll miss you but its time to move on :)

Switched
Ouch, I switched from xp-32 to 7-64, nothing like taking the plunge. It actually went very easily except now I can't play COD because PB keeps kicking me. I've seen the post about fixes, I fix one thing and another pops up, so I guess I'll just wait until PB updates. Since I'm using the beta, build 7100, I think it will be awhile. No problems mapping so far. The only real problem was with my sound card not being compatible by driver updates seems to have taken care of that. [thumbs_up]

Windows 7 not for me
I'm not interested in the mechanics of the software and how it all works I just want it to work. I have looked at some software written to run in windows 7 and all I can say is that the new interface sucks big style. My work flow has almost ground to a halt. I hate it with a vengance and the sad thing is MS are going to stick with it. Maybe it is time to switch to Linux.

Windows What?
Screw windows 7 - hell just screw windows. Using Ubuntu as my base OS with windows xp as a VM. Using windows as anything other than as just another application is like jumping off the roof and hoping it doesn't hurt when you hit the ground. As for windows 7 its just Vista with a new desktop, which strangely looks like KDE. And vista is half XP with all the now 10 year old XP system apps in it. Who the hell wants to pay like AU$500 for an OS with 10 year old software in it? If you want a really modern OS get Linux or OSX, they actually are 21st century, rather than just a new desktop running on top of 10 year old XP software.

Windows 7
I've been using W7 for a month and so far I haven't experienced any major problems. The one I have had is when I compile a map the compile quits during the visdata part. So I end up using XP to compile. Anyone else having that problem? This is CODUO that I'm having the problem in.[wave]
