AIAS 2007 Awards Announced

Posted by batistablr in Gaming News on Feb 10, 2007
The 10th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards were announced on Thursday evening during a ceremony in Las Vegas and the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences loved both Gears of War and Oblivion. The former took home the console game of the year and the latter nabbed the PC one. However, only one could take the overall game of the year and it was Gears of War. The title beat out tough competitors including The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Wii Sports, and Guitar Hero 2, in addition to Oblivion, of course.
Other winners as follows:

* Outstanding Innovation in Gaming -- Wii Sports
* Outstanding Innovation in Animation -- Gears of War
* Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction -- Gears of War
* Outstanding Achievement in Soundtrack -- Guitar Hero 2
* Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition -- LocoRoco
* Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design -- Call of Duty 3
* Outstanding Male Character Performance -- Gears of War
* Outstanding Female Character Performance -- Viva Pinata
* Outstanding Achievement in Story and Character Development -- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
* Outstanding Achievement in Gameplay Engineering -- Wii Sports
* Outstanding Achievement in Online Play -- Gears of War
* Outstanding Achievement in Visual Engineering -- Gears of War
* Outstanding Achievement in Game Design -- Wii Sports
* Sports Game of the Year -- Tony Hawk Project 8
* Strategy Game of the Year -- Company of Heroes
* First-Person Action Game of the Year -- Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas
* Fighting Game of the Year -- Fight Night Round 3
* Racing Game of the Year -- Burnout Revenge
* Role-Playing Game of the Year -- Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
* Children's Game of the Year -- LocoRoco
* Action/adventure Game of the Year -- Gears of War
* Handheld Game of the Year -- Nintendo Brain Age
* Family Game of the Year -- Guitar Hero 2
* Downloadable Game of the Year -- Bookworm Adventures
* Mobile Game of the Year -- Orcs and Elves

Publisher Capcom has for the past two years refused to pay the annual membership fees to the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences and as a result its games have not been valid for consideration. Last year, the company's Resident Evil 4, considered to be Game of the Year by many outlets, was completely absent from the AIAS awards. This year, Capcom's Okami and Lost Planet, both highly-rated efforts that have received top honors from respected online and print publications, were equally no-shows at the awards ceremony.
