BF2 COOP Work-around

Posted by foyleman in Battlefield 2 on Jun 29, 2005

I found a way to enable cooperative play for lan games. I was able to create and join two servers today.. and it was wonderful. It's sad that this game didn't come with coop and that EA has declined requests to support it in future patches.

Here's what you need to do in order to get coop working:

  • Create a Local Multiplayer, non-dedicated server. The map you choose doesn't matter.
  • Once the server has been created, have your coop player browse for local servers but DO NOT JOIN. The point is to get server listed so that they can join a single player game after it has been started.
  • Now the server must be stopped. Make sure your coop player does nothing at this time.
  • The server must now create a single player game. Choose the map you wish to play and start it up.
  • Once the map has loaded, have your coop player join the server listed. If they haven't touched anything during your setup, then you will still be listed as a joinable multiplayer server.
  • The coop player will then join your single player game and be able to play along with you.
Now, I have experienced a couple of bugs with this, but was certainly able to make it all work. You may not experience these bugs since the cause has not yet been determined. The bugs so far:
  • Attempted to join FuShe map and the coop player's machine crashed.
  • Attempted to join Karkand, in Veteran mode and while the server player was in battle. The server's machine crashed.
  • This method does not work over the internet. It only works on LAN games.
Please list your experiences here and if anyone comes across a more reliable method of playing coop, let me know.
