Quake Phones In

Posted by foyleman in Quake on Jun 28, 2005

Quake is making it's way to the cell phone market. Pulse Interactive and id software are working to bring Quake to the cell phone. I remember reading something in Carmacks blog about how much easier it was then he expected to program for a cell phone. To give you some insight as to what to expect, here are some quotes from Carmack that I found...

Somewhat to my surprise, there is very little internal conflictswitching off from the high end work during the day with gigs of data andmulti-hundred instruction fragment shaders down to texture mapping in java atnight with one table lookup per pixel and 100k of graphics. It’s all just programming and design work.

Network packet latency is bad, and not expected to beimproving in the foreseeable future, so multiplayer action games are prettymuch out.

Even the 9.8Kbit speed would be great fornetworked games. A wide variety of twoplayer peer-to-peer games and multiplayer packet server based games could beimplemented over this with excellent performance.

.. and something to come?

I have a small list of games that I think would work outwell, but what I decided to work on is DoomRPG – sort of Bard’s Tale meetsDoom.

Wouldn't it be awesome if we could port our old maps to the phones?
