Doom III: Too Little, Too Late?

Posted by rEdrUmMDK in DOOM III on May 4, 2004

Here is a little editorial I picked up at Filefront.  Can this be true.  I hope not.

Doom 3: Too Little, Too Late?

For you video game druggies out there waiting for Doom3 to arrive, you might find a little release in a placebo called Far Cry. It looks and tastes just like the real thing, partly using Pixel Shader 2.0, which includes dynamic, per-pixel lighting and high quality bumpmapping.

Seriously, shoot one of the hanging overhead lamps in “cold mode” with max-res: it’s like being able to catch a few glimpses into the future. Here and there are foreshadows of id software's godly release, stealing the debut of spectacular, more realistic graphics.

But you have to ask yourself–wasn’t Doom3 supposed to be the first game to come out with graphic technology like Far Cry’s? And wasn’t that John Carmack’s big cum shot that Crytek just stole with orgasmic delight? I think it was.

In the year 1999, a game came out that would truly change my life. For years before, I was an avid fan of the Command and Conquer series. What I was waiting for was the release of Westwood’s Command and Conquer 2: Tiberian Sun. They had previews for the game with the release of the original years before; so to say the least I was eagerly anticipating the release.

When it arrived, what I saw were outdated graphics, a cheesy storyline with fading movie star Michael Bien, and low-res gameplay that made me feel like I was directing cartoon characters in the bloodiest Looney Tunes ever. Aw, but Michael Bien was so convincing in Aliens though...

Okay, so maybe it didn’t change my life. But what it did do was teach me one important lesson: sometimes a good thing left too long goes moldy.
