TODAY the Left 4 Dead 2 authoring tools have been released by Valve. Go ahead right now, open Steam and hit the Tools tab. There you will find Left 4 Dead 2 Authoring Tools available for download and installation.

Also... if you want to be able to play your maps and mods (this is for players too, not just modders) you must download the Left 4 Dead Add-On Support package. It's located in the same place as the Authoring Tools (in Steam) and must be downloaded and installed.

The tools are about 20Mb and the Add-on support package is about 350Mb. Hopefully this doesn't deter anyone from playing your custom content once completed.

And a few more features for you...

Gamemode Logic: Designers can now make a single map that can behave differently depending on the gamemode in which it is being played. This can dramatically reduce the file size of Campaign add-ons, as the same map can be used for Co-op, Versus, Scavenge, and Survival.

Director Logic: Maps can now alter their layout and behavior depending on how "angry" the A.I. director is. The better the Survivors are doing, the angrier the AI Director seems to get. This allows you to base variable paths and other events on the player's skill and current conditions.

Scavenge Mode Support! All the elements map authors need to support Scavenge in their maps. This includes game props as well as a full example in the form of Deadline 2, an updated tutorial campaign.

For the best user experience and to take advantage of the new map and nav mesh formats, Left 4 Dead 1 Map Makers will want to compile Left 4 Dead 2 specific versions of their map in the new tool.

First of all, this is the first release, as i plan on continuing on this.
Some things as the gas station explosion have been removed as it caused l4d2 to freeze.
The intros will make it so you cant move left or right upon start, give it bout 15 seconds and you will be fine.
Crash course intro works.
No npc sounds such as radio or the church guy, sorry.
The B.H. finale froze up at the end, so i changed it to a scavenge type escape, this is however untested, but will be fully functional upon next update.
If you do not use the provided pak01 or edit yours where the read me tells you, you will have the old populations with neon shirts, so please follow the read me.
This also contains Trailblazers knife melee weapon.
And lastly, you must own l4d1 to play this as you need the assets from l4d1, any violation of the copyright laws is your responsibility and you can be held liable for these laws.

By the looks off it, custom models are now supported and very much a reality now! And that includes survivors, special infected, common infected and weapons. Not only that, it seems the weapon functionality can also be edited. So what does this all mean? Well it means mappers can have custom survivors, special/common infected and entirely new weapons unique to just their campaigns (i.e map side modifications, NOT server side)! The L4D modding scene just got a little more interesting boys and girls. Keep your eyes peeled and just think of all the custom content to come in the near future.

To some degree, this news softens the blow to modders frustrated by the delay....although it still raises the question: Just where are the Authoring Tools that were to be available upon release?

Lets just hope its not a repeat of L4D1's Authoring Tools release. But if you ask us, we'll glady wait it out if this is whats to come.

Valve is trying to workout a means of getting community mods for the Left 4 Dead game onto the 360. Right now the biggest obstacle is that most of the mods out there are built for mid to higher end PCs. The Xbox 360 isn't either of these... it's much slower.

"The coolest thing we could ever do would be to take something that was made by the community and share it with everybody - including Xbox 360 owners," Faliszek said. "How that happens and what work needs to be done is a little bit complicated."

Left 4 Dead has been updated with a host of fixes, tweaks and newfeatures, including enhancements to Versus mode for improvedcompetitive play. The full change list is below. For PC users the update will be applied automatically via Steam. Meanwhile, the update will be made available to Xbox 360 players in the coming weeks.

General

  • Fixed Survivors being able to climb surfaces marked for versus infected only
  • Fixed a class of SurvivorBot bugs dealing with rescuing downed players
  • Players can no longer grab ladders while flying through the air after a Tank punch
  • Shooting near a car with an alarm that has already fired the alarm will no longer make chirping noises
  • Improved loading time
  • Fixed mini-gun physics exploit
  • Fixed propane tanks (and other physics objects) causing players to fall through elevators
  • Fixed rare achievement bug issues
  • Fixed several map exploits
  • Fixed various match making issues
  • Fixed NAT traversal issues

Versus Changes
  • Added HUD elements to show status of other infected players
  • Changed color of infected player name in chat to red
  • Fixed exploit where players could spawn infected bots
  • Fixed instance where a Survivor changing to the infected team would be attacked by infected bots
  • Normalized special infected melee damage
  • Made the following client commands cheat protected: "Kill" and "explode"
  • Fixed exploit where infected players could run away and teleport back to gain health
  • Players can only change teams once per map
  • Players can't change teams while other players are still loading
  • Tank spawns at the same % through the map for both teams in versus mode
  • Made the Tank and Witch spawn directly on the escape route
  • Increased chance of getting the Tank or Witch
  • Fixed team swap issue

Hunter
  • Easier to pounce a Survivor who is meleeing
  • Increased Minimum damage a Hunter pounce does

Smoker
  • Fixed Smoker tongue tolerance
  • Smoker now has to be killed or the tongue destroyed for the tongue to break
  • Survivors cannot bash someone off the tongue until the Survivor being pulled is paralyzed or hanging
  • Tongue attacks that fail to paralyze or hang a Survivor will use the shorter ability delay timer
  • Fixed cases where the ability timer was not using the correct time
  • Fixed case where you could point at a Survivor but not register a tongue hit
  • Fixed Smoker tongue not targeting and landing properly through PZ ghosts
  • Smoker tongue does damage every second while dragging paralyzed Survivors

Tank
  • Bashable objects now appear with a red glow
  • Tanks hitting a car with an alarm disables the alarm permanently
  • Tank frustration timer is only reset by hitting Survivors with rocks or fists
  • Reduced autoshotgun damage against Tanks

Witch
  • Witch spawns at the same % through the map for both teams
  • Avoids spawning within a certain % of the tank
  • Fixed an exploit where the Witch could be woken up and tricked into attacking Survivors
